ROLLING STOCK DECOMMISSIONING
A comprehensive project involving the safe removal, dismantling, and recycling of a fleet of retired passenger trains for a major UK rail operator.
The Challenge
The client required the urgent removal of 20 decommissioned carriages from a busy depot to free up space for new rolling stock. The site had strict access restrictions and required work to be completed within a tight 4-week window without disrupting ongoing maintenance operations.
Our Solution
OPUS Group deployed a specialist team of engineers and heavy haulage experts. We developed a phased extraction plan that utilised night shifts to minimise operational impact. Our solution included:
- On-site hazard abatement (asbestos and fluid removal).
- Structural separation of carriages for safe transport.
- Coordination of heavy haulage convoys with police escorts.
- Final dismantling at our licensed recycling facility.
The Outcome
The project was completed 3 days ahead of schedule. We achieved a 96% recycling rate by weight, recovering valuable metals and components for resale. The client successfully introduced their new fleet on time, with zero safety incidents recorded.
